Ten Actions to Change Who You Are and Reach Your Potential

Do you:

Captured in a crisis of midlife?

conquering a challenge?

Feeling like “my life is over” all the time?

I will teach you how to recreate yourself in this tutorial.

I spoke with Todd Herman, the best-selling author of The Alter Ego Effect: The Power of Secret Identities to Transform Your Life, to assist with this. He is a specialist in changing people, having worked with top performers in business and sports for more than 20 years.

What Does Self-Reinvention Mean?

Making changes to the aspects of yourself that you no longer like or find useful is the definition of reinventing yourself. It could entail seeking new talents, quitting unhealthy behaviors, or modifying undesirable attributes. There are two possible reasons why you might feel the need to reinvent yourself:

  1. You become aware that your career, relationship, or course are incorrect. This indicates that you have been atop the incorrect ladder.
  2. You see that your rate of ascent is insufficient. Your objective seemed unachievable.

The main point is that you’re searching for a change if you wish to reinvent yourself.I would be delighted to assist.

How Much Time Does It Take to Start Over?

Remaking oneself takes around 66 days on average. In a 2009 study conducted by Phillippa Lally, a health psychology researcher, 96 volunteers selected a food, beverage, or activity behavior (such as having a water bottle with lunch or going for a 15-minute run before supper) to alter for the next 12 weeks.

These volunteers noted whether they engaged in the behavior each day and how natural it felt to do so. According to the findings, a behavior takes an average of 66 days to become automatic.

That being said, complete reinvention is not going to occur in 66 days. It may take several more months or perhaps years to significantly change your situation, fortune, or characteristics.

Ten Ideas to Reimagine Yourself

Are you quickly becoming a new version of yourself?

Try these unusual suggestions; hopefully they will benefit you as much as they did me.

Develop a Personal Alter Ego

Research indicates that envisioning oneself in the future can be challenging. When someone imagines their “future self,” they actually begin to think of someone entirely different.

The word “alter ego” comes from the Latin meaning “Other I,” and the Roman philosopher Cicero defined it as “a second self, a trusted friend,” or, to put it another way, as someone you can bring into your own head and converse with.

For instance, you could picture Mr. Rogers as your alter ego if you wish to practice love and compassion. Or, if you’d like to start your own business, you may take a cue from billionaires like Warren Buffett and Oprah.

Because they assist you in releasing yourself from your self-limiting ideas, alter egos are effective. Even though you may be too hard on yourself, it will be much simpler to align your beliefs with theirs if you picture yourself as someone like Bill Gates—someone with strong, selfless ideals.

Famous pop vocalist Halsey is an excellent illustration of how alter identities are used in real life. Ashley Nicolette Frangipane is Halsey’s real name; she wasn’t born Halsey. In an attempt to entirely transform herself, she came up with the public persona Halsey.

“I had to change completely into someone else. I thought Ashley wasn’t that special and didn’t deserve to be famous or successful at the moment, but maybe if I made Halsey she would be.

Which muscle are you most eager to flex? Is there something you’d like to get better at?

Identify your alter ego persona by quickly coming up with ideas:

Have you ever had any childhood heroes?

Which individuals, real or imaginary, possess attributes you find admirable?

Is there someone you can “make up” to represent your ideals if you are unable to think of anyone?

Go further after you’ve created your alter persona. Examine your selected individual:

What actions do they take?

Who do they socialize with during their free time?

What is their typical day-to-day schedule?

What routines do they follow?

How does their lives seem to be?

Which shared values do you have?

Which values are you willing to share?

During meditation, picture yourself as your alter ego; summon your alter ego in stressful or challenging situations; and “consult” your alter ego when faced with tough choices in your life. To “activate” your alter ego, you can even wear a specific outfit, wear a piece of apparel that reminds you of them, or add a photo of them to your screensaver.

You might gradually “become” your alter ego over time!Make the most of this strategy to harness the power of your alter ego.

Use the Hobby of Your Alter Ego

If you feel stuck, it can be difficult to reinvent yourself at times. Shaking up your thinking, your passions, and your time management is the only way to break out of a rut.

Do you recall the alter egos and role models you mentioned in the previous step? Okay, now find out what their interests are.

What is your role model’s reading list?

What interests does your role model have?

What is the way your idol passes their leisure time?

The secret is to avoid choosing the ones you already have. Select the ones you haven’t tried before.

“Writing, or show business, has only one rule. And that is to avoid being monotonous. — Joyce Carol Oates

For instance, the extraordinarily gifted author Joyce Carol Oates is one of my role models. Oates claims to trek a large hill close to her home. She treks that enormous hill when she’s stuck or gets writer’s block. Almost often, she claims, after she reaches the top, she gets an amazing idea.

I adored this concept, so I located the largest hill close to my house and hike it whenever I get stuck. Though difficult, it is completely effective. And since Joyce Carol Oates assured me it would, I believe it to be effective!

Your Main Objectives

You have all you need to reach your full potential. It’s time to aspire for your highest objectives.

Make a list of your top 20 goals, if you haven’t already, and then concentrate only on the top three to five. Why just three to five? It’s best to be more concentrated on a small number of goals rather than numerous, as I’ve found that people who focus on too many tend to achieve nothing.

Your Key Goals are these three to five objectives that you MUST accomplish, no matter what.

Don’t worry if you’re experiencing problems identifying your objectives. Discover how to achieve your objectives (with science!) below:

Establishing Objectives in the Classroom

Put these objectives on paper, hang them from the mirror, and say them aloud every night before bed.

After you’ve determined your main objectives, create your life system to position yourself for success.

Take a seat alone.

I think you should skip this step if you’re easily depressed.

On the other hand, research indicates that there are certain advantages to isolation if you can tolerate it.

What distinguishes being in solitude from being alone, though, first? Being alone yourself typically carries a negative connotation of being depressed and rejected.

We wish to stay away from this! Conversely, solitude is the affirmative sense that comes from understanding that you’re OK by yourself.

Research indicates that spending time alone yourself might enhance your sense of autonomy, ingenuity, closeness, and spirituality. Even ten minutes by myself, away from the computer, the spouse, and the rowdy neighbors, may truly help me focus inward.

I want you to think about the following questions when you’re alone:

What makes me want to start over?

Which routines and decisions would I have to accept?

Which behaviors and decisions would I have to refuse?

Will I persevere through difficult times?

You’ll be astounded at how much clearer your mind feels when you sit alone. To further declutter and remove yourself from the outer world, consider traveling for extended periods of time alone.

Reimagine Your Career

Do any of the following describe you?

Too little challenge in your professional life

Feeling undervalued, overworked, or underpaid

Lack of passion in your work

Then maybe it’s time for an adjustment. It’s never too late to make a midlife job transition, regardless of age—30, 40, or 50. In fact, a poll by Indeed found that the average age of a career switcher is 39.

Furthermore, switching jobs can help you advance to your desired position by the time you reach there, even if you’re not yet in your later years.

Start by stimulating your mind. If you’re still unsure about your career move, get ideas from this list of the top 10 happiest jobs.

Second, get your résumé ready. Create a résumé that is strong and resistant to recessions that will impress hiring managers of all stripes.

Lastly, create a LinkedIn profile. With these great LinkedIn recommendations, you may avoid jargon, make thematic updates, maximize your audience, and much more.

Fourth, give yourself a self-check. Ask the most memorable interview questions, project professionalism with your body language, and be prepared for the inevitable question, “What do you do?,””

Step five: begin networking. To improve your chances of changing careers, network online or at actual networking events.

In the end, I understand that changing careers can be intimidating. But if you can overcome your fear, enormous opportunities are also waiting for you!

Put on Success-Oriented Clothes

Your success can be significantly impacted by what you wear. Are you dressed in a way that conveys professionalism and success?

Researchers examined male subjects who were dressed in a suit, sweatpants, or their regular clothes in an intriguing 2014 study that was published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology. The subjects then started a negotiation with a partner.

The outcome? Professionally attired people closed more sales, and casually attired people had lower testosterone levels!

I know, shocking. Feelings are physically influenced by one’s attire.

Dress to reflect the kind of person you wish to be.

Pro Tip: Colors have the power to alter your mood as well. For instance, did you know that the 2004 Olympics’ red-clad combatants outperformed the blue-clad ones in terms of wins? See Color Psychology: What Colors Should You Wear and Why to find out more about the psychology of color.

Social Skills for Survival

Are you forced to perform boring tasks that you detest?

Getting the children up from school

Remaining within and unable to venture out

Having to labor on a project that no one wants to do

You must acquire some survival abilities. Gaining survival skills entails making the most of whatever you already have. Make opportunities by utilizing your daily activities:

Is picking up the kids from school a MUST for you? Take this chance to establish some friendships with the parents. Maybe the kids of the parents start making friends with YOUR kids. This may lead to the creation of new, entertaining groups that kids and parents can attend!

Do you HAVE to remain home and not go anywhere? —> Launch a side business online. —> Bring in passive revenue. —> Create a retirement fund with that money!

Do you HAVE to work on a project that you don’t enjoy? —> Learn the abilities needed to complete the job successfully. Become an expert in those areas more than any other member of your team. Develop into an authority and become necessary!

Although it can happen, radical, “fly to the other side of the world” changes are not the only way to reinvent yourself.

Regardless of your situation or activity, you have the power to make significant change using the chances presented to you.

Here’s what I would have you do: identify something that makes you uncomfortable or indifferent. What steps can you take to alter the situation? Are there any aspects of your everyday routine that you could leverage? You’ll notice significant changes in your routine if you make even one small adjustment.

Organize Your Goal

A goal system is just a planner, notebook, or log used to record your objectives. It has areas for contemplation, actionable steps, and if you’ve completed these steps.

Setting up an organization for your goals is now not just necessary, but crucial.

Why?

Your life’s compass is your goal system.

Here’s an illustration to clarify:

Consider yourself to be a ship’s captain. Your Life System serves as a compass to guide you toward your objective, which is to reach the next island. Along the journey, you’ll encounter thunderstorms, large waves, and other difficulties, but in the end, you’ll succeed because you’ll always know which way to travel. Imagine the identical situation now that there isn’t a compass. You would be lost; even if you were just one degree off course, you would still fail to reach the island.

You may use a comprehensive planner and task manager like Note, Evernote, or Todoist, or you can be creative with your own notebook to set up a Goal System.

Goal systems come in two flavors: simple and complex. Setting up the fundamentals is what I advise doing first (and adding onto it later!).

Here’s how to use Notion to get started:

  1. Visit Notion and register for a free account.
  2. Begin by creating a template (I suggest this one; you may Google “Notion life template” or “Notion goal template”).
  3. To add it to your Notion dashboard, click the Duplicate icon located in the upper right corner.
  4.    Start completing it now! To help you reach your goals, add daily tasks, monthly goals, and life goals to the weekly planner.

If you find this too technologically advanced, I suggest using a plain bullet journal.

You’ll be well on your way to self-reinvention once you have your Goal System established. Remain committed to your Goal System and monitor your completed activities; each action brings you one step closer to reaching your Primary Goals.

We’re Not Finished Yet

Todd said something that I really adore: We are never finished products. Baking is an ongoing activity.

I want you to always keep in mind that life is about continuously reinventing yourself, no matter what stage of reinvention you’re at. The challenges and demands of life will always exist. The good news is that the more heat you can withstand now, the more heat you can withstand later.

“How can I get closer to the heat?” asks your mind.Try rushing through the difficulties and strengthening your fortitude. By accepting various difficulties, you can increase your resilience:

Wellness: Take on a new challenge by managing your dietary habits or training for a half marathon.

Wealthy people should learn how to tackle problems as an entrepreneur or ask for a raise.

Mind: Take charge of your thoughts by learning more about yourself or going on a digital detox.

The Strength of Friendships

You’ve made the decision to start again and implement some of the preceding advice. Fantastic!

But according to a recent study by experts at the University of Georgia, people who reinvent themselves frequently end up miserable.

Really, wait? Indeed! This is due to the fact that when someone reinvents themselves, they sometimes lose their former interests or friendships in the process of adopting a new identity. This is particularly true in American culture, as compared to other cultures, friendships may come and go more easily.

There is a bright side, though. Your odds of happiness increase significantly if you are able to keep your current pals or even make new ones!

Consider your social circle when creating your plan for reinvention. Consider this:

Do the individuals I spend time with encourage me?

Are the individuals I associate with stimulating me?

Do the individuals I spend time with aid in my unstuckness or make it worse?

Ensure that the people you spend time with are supportive of your reinvention.
